The Public Aid Organization (PAO) organized a training workshop titled “Learning and Wellbeing in Emergencies” with the participation of several educational and teaching staff in the city of Mosul on Thursday, July 24, 2025, as part of the activities of the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) project. The workshop aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills related to the concept of social and emotional wellbeing (SEL) and its significance within the educational process, particularly in emergency and complex settings that children in Ninewa continue to experience following years of conflict. The training addressed key topics, including the definition of holistic child wellbeing and its core dimensions: health, nutrition, education, protection, and self-expression.
Additionally, it covered the five core competencies of social and emotional learning: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. It also covered the different types of psychological stress (positive and negative), strategies for managing them both inside and outside the classroom, and the importance of daily classroom routines, especially for displaced children. The sessions further explored how SEL can be integrated into curricula and daily classroom activities. After the workshop, participants expressed their appreciation for the initiative and emphasized the importance of expanding such training programs to all schools in conflict-affected areas across Iraq.
