As part of the project “Improving Human Rights Conditions and Enhancing Democratic Participation”, implemented by the Public Aid Organization (PAO) with the support of the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) and in partnership with the Ozone Network for Environmental Preservation, a groundbreaking initiative has been launched to strengthen the legislative framework for environmental protection and climate action in the Kurdistan Region.
A working group comprising representatives from key government ministries and institutions has been established to serve as a collaborative platform for enhancing environmental legislation.
The committee held its first meeting on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, to discuss and develop a comprehensive action plan aimed at amending Law No. (8) of 2008 – the Law on Environmental Protection and Improvement in the Kurdistan Region.
During the meeting, participants agreed to adopt a participatory approach that encourages the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders, including governmental bodies, experts, and civil society organizations, to share their insights, proposals, and recommendations for the law’s revision. This initiative marks a promising step toward a more sustainable and inclusive future, where human rights and environmental rights are intertwined, building a Kurdistan that values its people, protects its natural resources, and embraces the path toward sustainable development.
