A New Chapter with Youth: Building Confidence, Empowering Leaders, and Taking Steps Toward Change

The Public Aid Organization (PAO) successfully concluded two training workshops for youth peer leaders, as part of the Iraqi Youth Empowerment Program, funded by the British Council. The workshops marked an important first step in a journey that places young people at the heart of change.

Titled Capacity-Building Training for Peer Group Leaders – English Practice Club, the workshops were held over three days each: the first in Erbil from 5 to 7 October 2026, and the second in Baghdad from 10 to 12 October 2026, bringing together 23 young participants from Baghdad and Anbar, 12 from Baghdad and 11 from Anbar.

The training aimed to build young people’s capacities and prepare them to take an active role in leading peer groups. It focused on developing their English communication and practice skills, strengthening their self-confidence, and enhancing their ability to interact and exchange knowledge and experiences. Participants were encouraged to see themselves not only as learners, but as leaders who can inspire others and guide their peers toward growth.

Beyond language and leadership skills, the workshops helped create spaces for learning, communication, and participation, where young people from different governorates could meet, share ideas, and learn from one another. These connections form the foundation of the English Practice Clubs, which the participants will now lead within their own communities.

These workshops mark the beginning of a new chapter in PAO’s work with young people: empowering them, building their confidence in their abilities, and strengthening their role as leaders capable of creating positive change in their communities.
