An Innovative Training for Teachers in Mosul Using Non-Formal Education Tools

In a significant step towards improving the quality of education in crisis-affected areas, the Public Aid Organization (PAO) organized a three-day training course to build the capacities of teachers in Accelerated Learning Schools in Nineveh. The course, held between August 25 and 27, 2025, was part of the “Education Cannot Wait – ECW” project, funded by Mercy Corps, and implemented in three Iraqi governorates (Nineveh, Kirkuk, and Sulaymaniyah).
The course focused on equipping teachers with the necessary skills to handle crisis contexts and provide a classroom environment that fosters interaction and learning. Topics covered included classroom management principles, active learning strategies, and the formulation of educational objectives using the SMART approach. The course also emphasized the importance of creative lesson planning, continuous assessment methods, and SNAP strategies aimed at addressing individual challenges in the classroom.
The training was not limited to theoretical content; it also included practical and interactive activities that helped teachers develop actionable solutions to the daily challenges they face in the classroom. The focus was also on providing psychological and educational support to students, a key element in improving academic performance amidst crises.
At the conclusion of the event, a delegation from the Literacy Department in Nineveh attended to assess the course’s progress. Certificates of participation were distributed to teachers, and the Literacy Department was honored by the Public Aid Organization in recognition of its ongoing support in improving education standards in the governorate.
