As part of the Public Aid Organization (PAO) Basra Office’s efforts to strengthen knowledge and awareness of environmental issues, a dialogue session titled “The Environmental Concept and Its Modern Developments” was held, presented by Dr. Ali Wahab Ahmed, Director General of the Directorate of Environment Protection and Improvement in the Southern Region.
Dr. Ali took participants on a journey through the early formation of the concept of the environment and environmental action, highlighting key milestones and events that contributed to shaping global environmental awareness. The discussion covered the London smog incident, the widespread use of pesticides and the publication of Silent Spring, as well as the transformation of environmental protection towards broader concepts connected to sustainability.
The session then addressed some of the environmental challenges facing the world today, including climate change, clean energy, and recent developments in environmental protection. It also introduced the concept of the carbon market and its role within contemporary climate policies and approaches.
Beyond presentations and information, the session provided an open space for dialogue. Participants raised questions and shared perspectives on the current environmental reality, the challenges facing communities, and the roles of institutions, individuals, and society in building environmental awareness capable of turning knowledge into more sustainable practices.
