As part of the “Youth Connect” project, young people from the city of Mosul launched a community initiative titled “Safe Driving,” aiming to reduce traffic accidents and promote a culture of road safety. The initiative was supported by the Public Aid Organization (PAO), funded by the British Council, and implemented in cooperation with the Nineveh Traffic Directorate and the Mosul Municipality Directorate.
This initiative was launched in response to the increasing number of traffic accidents and the human and material losses they cause. The youth team carried out a series of awareness and coordination activities targeting drivers and road users directly.
The initiative included four main components:
First: Holding coordination meetings with the Nineveh Traffic Directorate to strengthen collaboration, identify key traffic challenges, and develop solutions.
Second: Producing three awareness videos highlighting traffic laws, public opinions, and the psychological, physical, and financial impacts of accidents.
Third: Installing five illuminated awareness billboards in key locations, focusing on the dangers of mobile phone use while driving, speeding, and driving against traffic.
Fourth: Distributing 1,000 brochures to drivers at major intersections across Mosul.
The organizers emphasized that these efforts represent a practical step toward building community awareness of road safety and reflect the important role of youth in creating positive change, protecting lives, and reducing accident-related losses.
The “Safe Driving” initiative stands as an effective model of youth engagement in addressing community issues through innovative tools that combine awareness with cooperation alongside relevant authorities.
