Meeting of the Environmental Defenders Protection Initiative in Dhi Qar Lays the Foundation for a Unified Environmental Coalition

On November 22, 2025, a special meeting was held in Dhi Qar Governorate for environmental activists within the framework of the Environmental Defenders Protection Initiative. The meeting brought together nearly fifty participants working in the environmental field, aiming to unify efforts and strengthen the role of environmental defenders in the governorate.
The meeting was implemented by the Water Friends Community Team, under the patronage of the “Promote the Human Rights Conditions and Enhancing Democratic Participation” program, implemented by Public Aid Organization (PAO) with the support of the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA).

The meeting created an open dialogue space between activists and supporting entities, during which the initial framework for the upcoming environmental coalition in the governorate was drafted. Participants outlined its vision, objectives, and priorities, ensuring a well-organized start for this promising environmental alliance. The gathering also contributed to establishing an effective communication network among activists and relevant institutions, enhancing future cooperation opportunities and strengthening environmental advocacy efforts.

Participants discussed the challenges faced by environmental workers—whether legal, social, institutional, or security-related—and analyzed these issues and proposed practical solutions to enhance the protection of environmental defenders and enable them to carry out their vital roles with greater safety and effectiveness.
The discussions also emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination between the initiative, government departments, and civil society organizations to ensure a supportive and sustainable environment for environmental efforts in Dhi Qar.

Through this meeting, the first steps are being laid toward a unified environmental coalition that enhances the presence of activists, organizes environmental work, and improves protection and advocacy mechanisms in addressing the environmental challenges facing the governorate.
