A round table in Basrah on the Prevention of Torture and the Right to Fair Trials with the participation of representatives of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, the Basra provincial council, academics, lawyers, activists, and members of civil society organizations. The session reviewed the stages of the work of the project ‘Promoting the Right to Fair Trials, Improving Detention Conditions and Abolishing Torture’, accompanied by a special presentation to the prime minister’s adviser on human rights, the representative of the UN mission, and the monitoring team represented at the High Commission for Human Rights. The session discussed the challenges of the justice system in Iraq and the obstacles that affect it, including the difficulty of accessing health care services for prisoners, the session concluded with several recommendations, including strengthening cooperation between institutions and activating the supervisory role and the importance of establishing a national mechanism to prevent torture. This event is part of the activities of the project to “promote the right to fair trials and improve conditions of detention and Abolishing Torture” implemented by the PAO in partnership with the NPA and the IOL funded by the European Union.
